Solberge Hall Hotel and Restaurant is situated just four miles south of the town of Northallerton, a busy market town, county town and administrative centre of North Yorkshire.  A few minutes drive from Northallerton and you’ll find yourself in the middle of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and the beautiful, picturesque Yorkshire Dales and just half and hours drive from Northallerton, you have the historic City of York and all its attractions.

Northallerton is a traditional Yorkshire market town whose place in history has been greatly influenced by its strategic position on the ‘Great North Road’.  Although the main traffic route has long since bypassed the town, its heart is still the High Street, which is long and broad and each Wednesday and Saturday is transformed into a bustling market town, which attracts shoppers from afar.  A local farmers market also takes place once a month where shoppers have to opportunity to support the smaller local business and purchase locally produced goods, including fruit and vegetables, dairy produce, preserves, gifts/crafts and plants.   

Northallertons main high street is lined with historic buildings and plaques marking where other have been and replaced over the years.  The town boasts a very high proportion of traditional independent local business together with national high street retailers.

There are many attractions and places to visit in Northallerton and the surrounding area.

Thirsk Racecourse

Just ten minutes drive from Solberge Hall Hotel is Thirsk Racecourse.  One of Yorkshire most beautiful racecourse with approximately fifteen days racing each year.  Annual members of Thirsk Racecourse also receive 15% of food and beverage at Solberge Hall (registration required/terms and conditions apply).

Northallerton is where you’ll find the most northerly branch, sited in a Grade II listed building, located on Northallertons, wide Georgian High Street.  Walk through the well-stoked shop and you’ll find an elegant Café and ‘Palm Room’  with a domed glass roof, huge window mirrors and a three metre tall Chusan Palm.

Monk Park Farm Animal Centre, Thirsk

Visit a working farm with modern and rare breeds, indoor and outdoor viewing and feeding areas.  Feed the ducks, Shetland ponies, pigs and piglets, sheep and pet lambs, goats, cattle and calves, rabbits, guinea pigs and fluffly chicks.



Sion Hill HallSion Hill Hall, Kirby Wiske, Northallerton
Sion Hill Hall was designed in 1912 by the renowned York Architect Walter H. Brierley 'the Lutyens of the North'.  With its fine lines, unique character and well planned layout, the house was described by the Royal Institute of British Architects as being of 'Outstanding Architectural Merit' and one of the best country houses to be constructed before the Great War. The House contains the H.W. Mawer collection of fine antique furniture, porcelain, paintings and clocks all in superb room settings. The Hall stands in its own grounds with lawns and level gravel paths.

Thorpe Perrow Arboretum, Bedale

Just ten minuites drive from Northallerton you’ll find this beautiful woodland garden covers eighty five acres of walks, glades, avenues and ornamental lakes, it contains the largest collection of trees in the North of England.  It is an exciting place for the family to explore.  There are tree, nature and children’s trails to follow, a licensed tea room, children’s play area and the thrill of watching flying displays at the Falcons of Thorpe Perrow.   



Nothallerton AreaThe World of James Herriot, Thirsk
Visit the original home and surgery of the world’s most famous vet.  The world of James Herriot is situated in Skeldale House, in Thirsk – in the original Grade Two listed building where the James Herriot stories were born.  The house has been lovingly restored to give into life here in the 19.40’s.  Re-live the famous TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ in the three studio sets.  There are many original props from the series, including the Austin 7 car.  The World of James Herriot also houses the only Veterinary Science Museum in the country.

The charming market town of Thirsk is rich in cabinet making skill and has a wealth of furniture making companies with workshops and showrooms.  The Thirsk Furniture Trail includes eleven furniture makers, all committed to producing furniture of exceptional quality.  Combined with the wonderful local scenery and other attractions in the area the Trail is a unique way to enjoy this part of North Yorkshire.
